Dr. John has a special interest in orthopedic surgery!
Orthopedic surgery refers to bone surgery. There are many different situations where bone surgery may be necessary including leg fractures, hip dysplasia, knee issues, etc. Most orthopedic surgeries can be performed at our hospital by Dr. John.
Stifle surgeries are the most common orthopedic surgery performed at Caledon Mountain Veterinary Hospital because of the frequency of problems with this joint. Treatment of a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament and patellar luxation are among the most common.
Bone fractures can occur at any age, but more commonly in young animals who are stepped on, have fallen or have been involved a motor vehicle accident. Thankfully, now-a-days we see fewer leg fractures due to motor vehicle accidents, because fewer dogs are loose and roaming free. Fractures can be treated in a variety of ways such as casting, pinning, plating and external fixation. The type or repair performed is dependant on the location and type of fracture.
