Pet Nutritional Coaching
Your pet’s diet and activity level have a significant effect on their overall health and happiness throughout their lifetime. An unbalanced diet can result in poor growth, weight gain and a predisposition to disease. Since nutrition is a fundamental pillar to health overall, our hospital in Caledon Village offers pet nutritional coaching to help owners start their pets on the most suitable diet for their life stage and overall health needs. We want to educate and help you with whatever diet you maybe feeding to ensure that diet is delivering the most benefits it can. Our coaching service is designed to make specific recommendations such as calculating exactly how many calories your pet should be consuming in a day, cost per day feeding and nutritional plans designed for specific conditions such as weight loss, growth, kidney & joint disease, food intolerance and diabetes.
Why You Need to Manage Your Pet’s Weight
Pets, especially those that do not engage in frequent activity, can easily gain weight. Low-quality food, improper food measurement, table scraps, and high-carb treats can cause serious problems. Like people, overweight pets can develop diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and respiratory issues. These conditions are costly to treat, and will make your pet miserable. Signs your pet is struggling with weight problems can include:
- Shortness of breath
- Getting tired very quickly
- Sleeping more often
- Having trouble walking
- Not being able to feel their ribs
- Their collar becoming too tight
- Becoming thicker around the middle
Helping You Find a Solution
One of our RVTs, Becky, has undergone training that focuses exclusively on nutrition. She has the most up-to-date knowledge to provide guidance in creating the best individualized approach for each patient depending on their life stage and personal needs, regardless of where their food is purchased. Since we don’t always have time to fully discuss your pet’s diet during their routine exam, Becky will work with you to pick a time where she can counsel you on developing healthy habits for your pet. This involves going over their current diet, discussing suitable options that are available, and planning the best way to help them lose weight. Our goal is not to sell products, but to help you help your pet live a happier, healthier life.
